During our yearly rc boat display in Wohlen, Switzerland, Moonraker was showed in a small basin. Therefore the top speed could not be achieved as of the limited size of this basin. Never the less beautiful detail shots have been the result from this yacht cruising in displacement mode. When speeding up the vessel quickly starts planing and the top speed is far above the hull speed nearly reached in the vid. Powered by three water jets – equally to the Moonrakers setup during 1992 – the max speed is between 25 and 30 km/h (what is perfect in scale to the original max. speed).

20’000 Leagues under the Sea, the world famous story about the submersible “Nautilus” and it’s charismatic Captain Nemo was told by Disney in the year 1954. Jules Verne described the boat as a cigar shaped object with pointed bow and stern. For the Disney movie it seemed a more dramatic design would fit better, that is why the Nautilus was newly drawn by Harper Goff, responsible for the Disney designs at this time. With his new design he tried to keep up the spirit and artistic style as in the original story, what he masterly achieved. The model is a kit from the German company Alexander Engel. The boat has full static dive capabilities what is perfectly seen in the video. Next to proposed details in the kit, the model has been amended with all other details found on the blueprints from Harper Goff, ie more than 4300 rivets have been added. With this and the fairly realistic paint the model became one of the highlights on this year’s model boat show from ASK in Suhr, Switzerland.
